Brewery 2: Persimmon Hollow Brewing , Deland FL

The great Florida Brewery 2015 road trip continues with a stop at Persimmon Hollow Brewing in Deland, FL. Deland is located roughly halfway between Orlando and Daytona Beach. In addition to being the home of Persimmon Hollow Brewing, Deland is also the county seat for Volusia County and is home to Stetson University. The area used to be known as Persimmon Hollow (hence the brewery name) prior to being “citified” as Deland in the late 1800’s.

Exterior

Persimmon Hollow Brewery opened in late 2014 and is located in the historic downtown district of Deland , at 111 West Georgia Ave. This is literally just a few steps from the main thoroughfares of Woodland Blvd (Hwy. 17) and New York Ave (SR. 44). A lot of Florida breweries tend to be located in industrial warehouse areas so its always nice to visit something in the center of town.

Funky Freddie Fritz Belgian Stout

Funky Freddie Fritz Belgian Stout

I had a couple of beers on my visit. First up was a Belgian stout named Funky Freddy Fritz Belgian Stout (6.5%). I’m not sure who Funky Freddy Fritz is, or was, but the beer was mighty tasty. Definitely tasted good on the cool day I was there. The second beer I had was a red ale named Paddle Wheeler Red (5.5%). I’m assuming this beer is named for old river boats that used to ply the nearby St. Johns River. The beer had a very nice balance of malt and hops and went down quite easy (just like some of those river boats!). Both highly recommended.

Finally, I’m not going to get into a habit of reviewing brewery restrooms, but the men’s restroom at Persimmon Hollow deserves mention. Great idea but I did have a slight fear of sharp cold metal edges!
