The Beer Goddess and I decided to spend last evening at home, drinking beer and playing golf. I’m not real sure when we decided to do that, but I have a feeling it was after a few beers. But, it was a nice blend of beers. The beers included: Yuengling Black and Tan, Red Brick Brown Ale, Kona Brewing Pipeline Porter, Holy Mackerel Golden Ale, Hook & Ladder Golden Ale, and Anheuser Busch Golden Wheat. I may have to go and consult the recycling bin as I think there was another one in there as well, but for the life of me I can’t remember it! The ‘Golf’ was actually a card game which we recently learned from our neighbors. It is a fun game, and remains quite easy to play (i.e. short attention span) after a few beers.
During the game, we attempted (ok, it was more I attempted rather than The Beer Goddess) to develop an overall beer enjoyment meter. And here is a step by step guide for the Beer Living Beer Enjoyment Meter.
Step 1 : Drink a beer. This is the fun part!
Step 2: Write the beer name. I would recommend using a computer to keep track of this as there will be lots of changes over time. Unless of course you are really good with an eraser and white out.
Step 3: Drink a different beer. This part is just as fun as Step 1!.
Now pretend you walk into a bar and they have only two choices for beer. The first beer or the second beer. Which would you choose to order? Write that beer name above the lower ranked beer name.
Repeat Steps 3 and 4. Try and find a place in the list for each beer. You may have to go up and down the list a couple of times to see where the beer falls. Is it better than that one? Not sure but I know its better than this one…you get the idea. Try and eliminate any environmental conditions causing beer enjoyment. For example that Wit beer may be tasting really good only because you just finished mowing the yard, but on a ‘typical’ day you wouldn’t like it as much. I admit this is hard to do.
Over time, you will not only get a good list of your favorite beers, but you will also systematically identify the styles of beer which are your favorites and the styles that you don’t care for as much. From my list its actually looking like Lager is one of my least favorite styles. I’ll share my Beer Living Beer Enjoyment Meter results in a few weeks.
And for those of you who are still paying attention, The Beer Goddess kicked my butt in golf….
