Not that can. The Beer Can. January 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the beer can. In January 1935, the Kreuger Brewing Company of Richmond Virgina introduced the beer can to the American public. It was made of 3 pieces of enameled steel, weighed 3 ounces empty and required a can opener (aka church key) to open it. The sale of Kreuger’s Finest Beer and Kreuger’s Cream Ale shot up 550%.
With beer available in cans, America needed a can opener. So on April 2, 1935, Dewitt Sampson and John M. Hothersall were granted U. S. Patent Number 1,996,550 for their can opener invention.
I’m sure there were a lot of thirsty people between January and April.
The beer can is now the same age as Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, and Donald Duck.
