State Beer Taxes – Highest and Lowest

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

In my mind beer and taxes do not mix. Although the more I think about taxes, the more beer I want, so there may indeed be some connection. Over the past few months a large number of states want to increase the taxes on beer (those bastages!). Here are the highest and lowest states as of January 1, 2009. These numbers do not reflect the federal tax ($0.58 per gallon), or any additional sales tax.

The Five Highest Beer Tax States (tax per gallon):
Alaska   $1.07
Alabama $1.05
Georgia $1.01
South Carolina $0.768
North Carolina $ 0.53

The Five Lowest Beer Tax States (tax per gallon):
Wyoming $0.019
Missouri $0.06
Wisconsin $0.06
Pennsylvania $0.08
Colorado $0.08

Graphically, here is a nice map from The Tax Foundation. I think a road trip to Wyoming may be in the future……
