The title of this post sounds like a lead in for your local television news, but it is in fact about the recent proliferation of pumpkin beers. Several years ago there were only a couple of pumpkin beers available here in Florida. But on a recent trip to Total Wine & More in Orlando, FL (which has a great beer selection by the way), I was delighted to find close to a dozen different varieties. I was like a kid in a candy pumpkin beer store. Some of these include, Pumpkinhead Ale by Shipyard Brewing, Post Road Pumpkin Ale by Brooklyn Brewery, Punkin’ Ale by Dogfish Head Brewery, Imperial Pumpkin Ale by Weyerbacher, Harvest Moon by Blue Moon, and Pumpkin Ale by Buffalo Bill’s Brewery. I’ve had some of these in previous years, but some are new for me. Pumpkinhead Ale has historically been my favorite, but in the coming days we will see who wins “The Great Pumpkin ‘Off” in 2009. The Great Pumpkin ‘Off sounds like a Russian magic act, but the only thing disappearing will be the beer….
